THE KWANZAA CANDLE LIGHTING CEREMONY
AT
THE KANSAS STATE CAPITOL
Was held on Monday December 27, 2021, at 3:30 p.m.
The Event was hosted by:
The Historic St. Mark's AME Church
Rev. Shirley D. Heermance, Pastor
The Honorable Laura Kelly, Kansas State Governor and Stacey Knoell, Executive Director of the Kansas African American Affairs Commission brought remarks. Prior to the candle lighting service, Rev. Heermance shared some history about KWANZAA and Sis Carolyn Wims-Campbell read the Seven Principles of KWANZAA while Brother Foster Chisholm lit the candles, noting that Governor Kelly lit the first candle. The event was with media coverage, members from St. Mark's AME Church, a small community group, along with visitors that stopped their tour to witness the program. The KWANZAA table remained in the State House for the duration of the season.
